Fixer Services — Rome & Italy
Film & Photo Fixer
in Rome and Italy
NREAL Productions operates as a professional film and photo fixer in Rome and across Italy. We handle permits, crew, locations, equipment and logistics for international productions — in English, Spanish and Italian.
What is a Fixer —
and when do you need one?
A fixer is your local production partner on the ground. The term comes from the world of journalism and documentary filmmaking, where international crews arriving in a foreign country needed someone who could arrange everything: access, permits, translators, cars, contacts. In production, the concept is identical — you are a foreign team arriving in Italy, and you need someone who knows how this country actually works.
Italy is a beautiful country to shoot in. It is also a country where knowing the right person, speaking the right language, and understanding the bureaucratic rhythms of local institutions makes the difference between a smooth production and a logistical nightmare. A municipal permit for a public square in Rome can take two weeks or two days depending entirely on who you ask and how. A location that appears inaccessible can open its doors to someone with the right contact. A crew problem that would derail a foreign team can be resolved in a single phone call by someone with a local network built over years.
You need a fixer when you are shooting in Italy as an international production — whether you are a London agency on a three-day editorial, a New York production house on a commercial campaign, an independent photographer planning a fashion shoot in Rome, or a documentary crew that needs access to heritage sites. If you don't know Italy from the inside, you need someone who does.
Signs you need a fixer in Italy
You don't speak Italian and need to deal with municipal offices or heritage authorities
You need filming permits for public spaces, piazzas, or protected heritage sites
You are looking for locations but don't know Rome's neighbourhoods or Italy's regions
You need local crew — photographers, stylists, HMU artists, assistants — but have no existing contacts
You need equipment but don't know Italian rental houses or logistics
You want a single point of contact who manages everything on the ground while you focus on the creative
NREAL Productions has been operating in Rome since 2014, building the relationships, the knowledge, and the network that make this kind of access possible. We are not a directory service. We are a production team that works alongside you.
What we handle
as your fixer in Italy
Our fixer services cover every logistical dimension of a production. From the moment you send us your brief, we take ownership of the ground-level work so your team arrives to an organised set, not a problem to solve.
Filming Permits
Rome is one of the most permit-intensive cities in the world for film and photo production. Public spaces require municipal authorization from Roma Capitale. Heritage sites — the Colosseum, the Foro Romano, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant'Angelo — require separate permits from the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma, which governs all protected assets.
We handle the full permit process: application preparation, institutional liaison, fee payment, and coordination with site managers on the day. We know which offices to contact, what documents are required, and how long the process realistically takes. For locations requiring 15-day advance notice, we plan accordingly.
Location Scouting
We scout locations in Rome and across Italy based on your creative brief. We don't work from a stock database — we work from direct knowledge of the city and a network of private location owners, estate managers, and municipal contacts built over more than a decade.
We also maintain Italy Locations, a curated database of filming and photography locations across Italy — a resource built specifically to support international productions looking for the right visual context.
Local Crew Sourcing
We source and coordinate local production crew for international shoots: photography assistants, directors of photography, camera operators, stylists, hair and makeup artists, art directors, set designers, and production assistants.
Our network includes trusted professionals across Rome and the major Italian cities. We provide crew that is experienced in working with international productions, understands English-language workflows, and meets the technical standards your team expects.
Equipment Rental
We coordinate equipment logistics for productions coming from abroad — whether that means renting from our own inventory or sourcing from trusted partners across Rome and Italy. Our own kit includes Profoto battery flash systems, Sony cinema cameras (A7S III, FX3), Nanlite LED panels, and DJI aerial platforms.
See our full equipment rental catalogue for details on what's available in Rome.
Transportation & Logistics
Getting around Rome with production equipment is not the same as getting around London or New York. ZTL restricted zones, limited traffic permits, loading restrictions near heritage sites, and the general complexity of Italian urban mobility all require local knowledge.
We coordinate vans, drivers, and equipment logistics. We know which streets are accessible and when, how to get production vehicles into restricted zones with the right authorizations, and how to move a full kit efficiently across Rome or between cities.
On-Set Coordination & Language Support
On the day of the shoot, we are present to manage the logistics so your creative team can focus entirely on the work. This means coordinating the crew call times, managing location access, liaising with permit holders and site supervisors, and solving problems as they arise.
We communicate in English, Spanish, and Italian — bridging the gap between your team and everyone else on the ground without the delays and misunderstandings that come from working through a third-party interpreter.
All fixer services can be engaged individually or as a complete package depending on what your production needs. We work with you at the brief stage to scope exactly what level of support is required and price accordingly.
Fixer vs Production Company —
what do you actually need?
This is one of the most common questions we get from international clients approaching a shoot in Italy for the first time. The distinction matters — and getting it right affects your budget, your workflow, and who you spend your production days dealing with.
When you need a Fixer
A fixer is the right choice when you already have your creative direction locked — you know what you're shooting, you have your photographer or director, and what you need is someone to handle the local logistics that stand between your vision and the actual shoot.
Typical fixer engagements include: international editorial teams shooting in Rome who need permits and crew; independent photographers arriving from New York or London for a fashion editorial who need location access and equipment; documentary crews who need local contacts and institutional access; commercial productions who have their own creative team but need someone to manage Italy-specific logistics.
When you need a Production Company
A full production company engagement is appropriate when you need creative direction in addition to logistics — concept development, casting, art direction, full crew management, and end-to-end production delivery. This is where NREAL Productions operates as a boutique house rather than a fixer.
If you are a brand or agency briefing a shoot from scratch in Italy and you don't have a photographer or director attached, you likely need the production company model — where we take the brief and deliver the final images, not just the logistics behind them.
The NREAL Advantage
NREAL Productions does both — and can scale to exactly what you need. We can come in as a pure fixer on a project where your creative team is fully formed, and we can come in as the full production house when you need us to lead. Most of our engagements sit somewhere in between: a client with a strong creative vision who needs production leadership and local expertise to execute it in Italy.
This flexibility — combined with our trilingual capability and Rome-based network — is what makes NREAL the right partner regardless of what point in the process you contact us.
Why choose NREAL
as your fixer in Italy
Trilingual
English, Spanish and Italian — native-level in all three. No language barrier between your team and the local world. Direct communication with municipal offices, landlords, crew, and site managers without a third-party interpreter.
Rome-Based Since 2014
Over a decade of production work in Rome and across Italy. Real institutional relationships, not cold calls. We know who to contact at Roma Capitale, at the Soprintendenza, at private estates. This network is what gives you access.
Full Production Capability
Unlike a solo fixer, NREAL Productions brings the full infrastructure of a boutique house: professional equipment, BTS/EPK capability as an add-on, location database, and the ability to scale up to full production if needed.
Italy Locations Database
We operate Italy Locations (italylocations.com), a curated database of filming and photography locations across the country — an asset that gives your location scouting a significant head start.
Flexible Scope
From a single-day permit and location coordination for a small editorial, to multi-week full production support for a major campaign or feature film. We price to scope and don't charge for services you don't need.
BTS as Add-On
Need behind-the-scenes coverage of your production in Italy? NREAL's BTS and EPK capability means you can have the same team handling logistics and delivering professional behind-the-scenes content — one less vendor to coordinate.
Fixer services
across Italy
Rome is our base, but our fixer services extend across the entire country. Italy's regions offer radically different visual worlds — and each brings its own logistical complexity that requires local knowledge to navigate efficiently.
Amalfi Coast & Campania
One of the world's most photographed coastlines — and one of the most logistically challenging to shoot on. Narrow roads, restricted vehicle access, steep terrain, and the need for advance coordination with local municipalities. We know how to make it work.
Tuscany
The classic visual backdrop of Italian production — rolling hills, cypress trees, medieval hilltowns, private villas. Tuscany is well-developed for international shoots but still requires local contacts for private property access and permit coordination in historic centres like Florence and Siena.
Sicily
Italy's largest island offers a unique visual landscape combining Greek temples, Baroque architecture, black volcanic rock, and Mediterranean light. Sicily is increasingly popular for fashion and film production. We maintain contacts across Palermo, Catania, Taormina, and the Agrigento coast.
Milan & Northern Italy
Fashion capital and financial hub. Milan requires a very different production approach than Rome — faster, more corporate, with a dense network of studios and agencies. We operate comfortably across the north, including Venice, Lake Como, and the Dolomites.
Puglia & the South
Puglia has emerged as one of Italy's most desirable production destinations — trulli houses, Baroque Lecce, kilometre-long beaches, and relatively lower logistical costs. Our network in Puglia includes location scouts, local crew, and permit contacts across Bari, Lecce, and the Valle d'Itria.
Dolomites & Alpine Italy
For productions requiring dramatic mountain landscapes, the Dolomites deliver unmatched visual scale. High-altitude shoots require specific logistics — weather monitoring, specialised equipment transport, local alpine guides. We coordinate productions across the South Tyrol and Trentino regions.
Wherever your production takes you in Italy, we handle the advance logistics so you can arrive knowing the ground is prepared. Travel costs are discussed transparently as part of the brief and included in the project quote.
How it works —
three steps from brief to shoot
01
Send Your Brief
Tell us what you're shooting, where, when, and what you already have in place. The more detail the better — locations you have in mind, crew you're bringing, equipment situation, timeline. We review within 24 hours and come back with any questions.
02
We Quote Within 24h
Based on your brief, we prepare a clear scope of fixer services with transparent pricing. No hidden fees. If permits are involved, we indicate realistic timelines. If we need more information to quote accurately, we'll say so — we don't send guesswork numbers.
03
We Handle Everything on the Ground
Once confirmed, we begin pre-production — permits, location booking, crew coordination, equipment logistics. By the time your team arrives, everything is in place. On the day, we are present to manage the ground so you can focus entirely on the work.
Frequently asked
questions
How much does a fixer cost in Italy?
Fixer services typically start from €800 per day for basic logistical support — location coordination, permit assistance, and on-the-ground guidance. Comprehensive packages involving full crew management, multi-location permits across several days, equipment logistics, and dedicated on-set coordination are scoped and priced per project. Indicative rates. Final pricing depends on project scope, schedule, night/holiday hours, and specific requirements. Contact us with your brief for an accurate quote.
How far in advance should I book?
Two to four weeks is ideal. This gives enough runway to obtain filming permits — which in Rome can take 7 to 15 working days depending on the location and authority involved — source the right crew, and arrange logistics without rushing. That said, we are experienced with fast-turnaround productions and can mobilise quickly for urgent projects. Reach out even if your timeline is tight.
Do you work outside Rome?
Yes — all of Italy. While Rome is our base, we operate nationwide. We have production contacts across Tuscany, Sicily, Puglia, the Amalfi Coast, Milan, and the northern regions including the Dolomites. Wherever your shoot takes you, we handle the local logistics.
Can you provide BTS coverage too?
Yes. BTS and EPK coverage can be added to any fixer engagement. We have experience as BTS operators on major international productions shot in Italy. See our BTS & EPK page for details on what that involves.
What languages do you work in?
English, Spanish, and Italian — all at native or near-native level. This is one of the most practical aspects of working with NREAL Productions: we communicate with your team in English or Spanish and handle all Italian-language dealings — permits, locations, crew, logistics — ourselves. No interpreter required.
